A practical framework for choosing (or keeping) toys
You don't need to audit an entire toy box against a research paper. A few practical questions do most of the work.
Does the toy suggest one action, or many?
If a toy's main appeal is a button, a sound, or a single trick, it will likely hold interest for a shorter window than a toy that can become ten different things depending on the day. That doesn't mean skip it entirely — it means expect a shorter shelf life and budget accordingly.
Can the child change what happens, or only how often it happens?
A toy where the child controls when something happens (press the button, hear the sound) is different from a toy where the child controls what happens (build the tower this way or that way, invent the story). Is the toy box overwhelming to look at?
